Foundation of the Philosophy

About 14 years ago, Dr. Erica discerned a recurring theme while working in private practice. Individuals facing challenges—relationship woes, career uncertainties, family dynamics, substance use concerns, or the trauma of domestic or interpersonal violence— all shared overlapping emotional and psychological threads. Yet, while there were hints of a shared essence, these patterns were challenging to categorize, because each situation still felt rich in their unique circumstances. This observation culminated in creating a guided framework to highlight opportunities for personal growth in individual challenges for better support and hope. From this, the 'C.H.O.I.C.E.S' acronym emerged, serving as a beacon for all of us to navigate our multifaceted journeys.

The C.H.O.I.C.E.S Framework

Communication: Expressing your thoughts, feelings, and concerns clearly and effectively is paramount. Communication is not just about speaking, but also about listening to others and understanding their perspectives. Good communication strengthens relationships, resolves conflicts, and improves decision-making. Like any skill, it can be honed with practice and patience.

Honesty: The cornerstone of any healthy relationship, whether with others or oneself, is honesty. Be true to your values, feelings, and actions. Honesty fosters trust, authenticity, and respect. It encourages open communication and mutual understanding. Self-honesty is paramount in making informed choices, allowing you to assess your situation objectively and make decisions that genuinely serve your interests.

Opportunities: Being proactive and taking initiative is the essence of seizing opportunities. Embrace challenges by stepping out of your comfort zone and aiming for growth. Opportunities manifest in many forms, demanding courage, resilience, and adaptability. By seizing them, you open doors to new experiences, relationships, and fresh paths for personal growth.

Insight: Gaining insight is an ongoing journey demanding curiosity, openness, and humility. Understand your strengths, weaknesses, motivations, and potential. Draw insights and learn. Let them guide your choices, inform your actions, and shape your growth.

Control: Asserting control means taking responsibility for your actions and well-being. Set boundaries, manage your time, and prioritize your needs. Control empowers you to mold your life according to your vision, fostering self-discipline, self-efficacy, and self-determination.

Evaluation: Assess your choices and their outcomes. Learn from successes and failures, using this knowledge to steer your decisions. Through evaluation, one nurtures self-awareness, fosters self-improvement, and embarks on genuine personal growth.

Support: The journey towards personal growth can be challenging. However, with steadfast backing, it transforms into rewarding and enriching experiences. Support can be emotional, practical, informational, or motivational. It fosters resilience, positivity, and further growth.
